First: Their tech is good, GPT-3 is really cool. No problem there.
Maybe someone better-informed than me can add or correct this, but the idyllic mission of the group has changed drastically. For instance, despite being extremely well-funded, it became for-profit (some structure I don't understand; there's like a for-profit LP controlled by a not-for-profit or something like that).
Secondly, they call themselves "Open"AI but they're very much not open at all, and they've become much more secretive (this seems to have basically commenced with the quasi-release of GPT-2).
Finally, I've met people who have worked there and those people I have met are dripping in objectivist silicon valley god complexes, so probably the dominant ideology at the lab is one that will continue leading them down the for-profit, closed-source path.
If they sucked it wouldn't be a loss, but what they make is very impressive so it's a real bummer that they act like this and it seems to be getting worse.
